The solar panels are being installed this week. We are able to have the full 16 panels we wanted for a 4Kw system. He is installing them according to the new regulations coming in later this year (about enclosing […]

Weeded my vegie garden yesterday- soil is looking good and relatively warm- looking forward to planting seeds in a few weeks. Does anyone know where I can buy some organic seeds?

    • Green Harvest is an Australian business which specialises in organic seeds, books, garden supplies and all sorts of goodies. They have a quick turnaround and supply lots of cultural info.

  • This entry describes the challenges of my home. My house was built in 1977 as a rectangle with long walls on the south and north and short walls on the east and west but with completely wrong orientation- the […]

In reply to: Joh commented on the post, Solar panels @ Baset another useful article on solar panels from Gmagazine http://www.gmagazine.com.au/features/3120/7-tips-going-solar I found the comments on doing the maths very interesting. View

Thanks. Our solar installer came round today for a detailed site visit- we can fit 16 panels which will make us practically self sufficient:) And with the insulation in now- and feeling the difference- our energy usage should go down. The panels should be installed by end of the month.

I did not mean that they should not be challeges, but that they possibly should be compulsory challenges as they are relatively speaking the easiest to do.
Re recycling, while it is very easy to recycle in the ACT, it does seem to me that many things are over-packaged resulting in greater amounts to be recycled. There is not enough emphasis on…[Read more]

Just a question about why a maximum of 5 challenges? Some of the challenges- eg not using plastic bags, shopping locally and seasonally, reducing waste, washing efficiently, buying post consumer recycled toilet paper are so simple and everyone should do these as a matter of course.

    • Hi @Bastet. The 5 maximum challenges is a limitation of the technology, originally we did want people to choose as many as they were comfortable with. Some people have registered for 5 challenges and also taken on others. To be eligible to win prizes, people need to be doing at least one energy or transport related challenge, which is an incentive…[Read more]

      • Agree with @Ecoaction. While you & I might think that not using plastic shopping bags is really easy, others might have difficulty. And the challenges are broad enough that you can interpret what you want.

For me, our household waste is quite small compared to others (one kitchen bag per week, not necessarily full), but our recycling is fairly…[Read more]

    • I understand Bastets’ comment about 5 chalenges and also agree with Lucinda, that for some people, what we find as simple or ’no brainers’ may be more challenging for some people. I have taken on my five, but I am sure, like others, am working on more than just five.
