In reply to: Joh commented on the post, Exploring ways to seal air leaks I now have my pelmets up and am noticing a difference, with less draft from around the windows. View

Good to know! I’m all about the draughts. Has it made a difference in how comfortable the room feels, or how much heating you’re using? I’ve noticed a difference in my house since I started covering the windows better, both in comfort (it doesn’t matter how warm the room is if you’re near a cold draught :/ ) and in our energy use.

Hey @lucinda. I have backed curatins on one window (old and not big enough to really keep the warmth in) and those stupid skinny aluminium venetian blinds on the others. There’s one with nothing that I haven’t covered yet :/.

Noticing I’m using faaaar less energy to heat my house since I got better window coverings. I also made a door snake to go by the door closest the heater. So far the heater’s been on half what it was last year in similar temperatures (setting doesn’t go above 4, last year it didn’t get below 7 – the highest). Still not finished & looking…[Read more]

    • Just out of curiosity – what window coverings did you have & what did you change to? It’s our first winter in our house & the heating seems to be on a fair bit… We are looking into making a pelmet (trial run to see how it goes) using the link you posted a couple of weeks ago!

In reply to: Joh wrote a new post, Exploring ways to seal air leaks I have began exploring ways of sealing air leaks and am looking into making pelmets for my windows. Has anyone else done this? View

    Hi Joh,
If you google ’make pelmets’ you’ll find quite a few instructions including youtube. Curbly often has great DIY’s, too: http://www.domesticadventure.com/2010/10/diy-cornices/ Make sure you block up the top, as well :)
Let us know how it goes! Also, they’re often at Tiny’s (tip shop) so you might be able to modify one.

  • I’ve been asked loads of questions about window treatments after making a blind for my rental. So.
I made a swedish blind out of an old quilt (doona). It worked really well, but the quilt is not the best way to […]

  • Right! It’s getting cold! Time to get onto those challenges I chose last week. I figure I can get a twofer with sealing airleaks & heating, cos one helps the other along & I’m already huddling under blankets in […]

  • Just registered! Really looking forward to meeting my challenges (and having extra inspiration to help me get there)
Look forward to meeting people at the workshops!

Retrofitting for renters was excellent, lots of ideas at various costs for different circumstances. Covering windows/glass properly is key to keeping the warmth in, and block those draughts, people. I am a frenzy of door snake making.

First official turn on the heater day in Canberra, and it’s cooooold outside. Having blinds up is making a huge difference. Looking forward to comparing electricity use from the same time last year, will definitely be lower this winter, even if it’s colder than the last. Not sure how much of the impact is from blocking the wall vents, but it’s…[Read more]

In reply to: Larissa posted an update Does anyone have advice on composting during a Canberra winter. I have heard I need to keep it quite warm for the break down to start. View

    Hi Larissa.
I don’t do anything different to mine & it lasts fine. Ours is in a sunny spot though, if you’ve got it in a very cold/shady spot it most likely won’t work so well. Ours is in our garden and does really well all year.

Done! I made my doona swedish blind. If I’d made more of an effort it would look better, but it’s pretty good! It’s definitely makiing a difference. If I was to do it again, I think I wouldn’t use a doona, though. Maybe something thinner and lighter with a close weave. But I’m definitely happy it’s up, is upcycled, & is keeping us warm. Also…[Read more]

    Hi @Billy,
I’m doing a couple of energy based challenges. I finished making a swedish blind from a dump-shop quilt last night, and am going to hang it tonight. I’ll see if I can post a photo. I’ve also been scouring opshops, ywca garage sales etc for other window treatments, and got some good, backed curtains which i’m going to make look a…[Read more]

Had a genius idea to meet my ‘draught proofing’ challenge. I used left over fill from the doona I got to make window blinds in our wall vents. You can either roll them between your palms to make a tight tube and pack them in flush with the wall, or you can just poke them into the vents so they look like clouds creeping in to the living room. I…[Read more]

In reply to: Larissa posted an update Is anyone doing anything specific to keep Easter eco? Organic chocolate, car pooling to family gatherings? Home made goodies? I would be interested to hear about it! View

It’s the big easter weekend of comfort at my house! I’m getting on to draught proofing, keeping the house warmer as the weather turns cold. I was looking at my terrible rental blinds this morning & thinking of cellular blinds, which make a big difference in temperature and energy use. I’ll have to try and think of a way to get something similar…[Read more]
