Went along to the Canberra Environment Workshop this last weekend – although we had heard it before it was a good revision. Also my husband is showing more interest in chooks after seeing the ones at the Environment Centre. Great plus!!!

    • @Rachel My husband was very unwilling to have chooks for years – until a few months ago when some visiting friends said, “You could have chooks here!” at the very spot I had already thought would be perfect for a pen! My husband thought it would be a good idea after all, and now we have a pen which they helped build, and four lovely brown…[Read more]

Just wondered regarding the heat mat – is that electric and if so how do you manage with the seedings being watered etc?

Does anyone know where you can get some cheap straw locally for using in the compost heap. Ours has too much green waste at the moment and is too wet.

    • I’d love to know about some cheap straw too – for our new chooks, coming today!

    • @Rachel I have the same problem with my compost. You can use grass clippings. But we have such a small lawn now and use a push mower so don’t collect the clippings. I would be interested in getting some bulk straw if anyone has a good supplier.

Just registered and paid for 9 of the workshops – really looking forward to all the helpful information.
Also we had solar hot water installed several months ago – our first full electricity bill has just come in with a 40% less useage than the same time last year. Really excellent.

We went to the Liveability seminar at Old Parliament House on Sunday. Excellent speakers and also lots of “stands” with various organisations giving useful information. Have persuaded my partner to have our house assessed for energy use etc.

    • @Rachel there was a lot of discussion about sliding doors at the workshop on Thursday night. There general feeling was that the issue of draughts and sliding doors are really difficult to address. Maybe others who attended and have tried could offer more advice?

    • I think you need to get the furry strip sealers that are used on windows. They are not a perfect fit and you may have to experiment a bit to get the right one for you door. They are glued to the inside of the cavity. There seems to be a few to choose from. For the bottom of the door, someone at the workshop used those noodle draft excluders that…[Read more]

I notice that CIT solutions shave a course on keeping chooks. It is sometime in this next Semester. If you contact them I am sure you would be able to get the details.

Hi everyone – I’ve just joined up with the challenge and look forward to seeing what can be achieved over the next few months or so. It is really an ongoing challenge though – continually trying to achieve a better outcome for the environment.

    • @Rachel I agree Rachel, it IS an ongoing challenge. The exciting thing about the eco challenge is that you can share your ideas with likeminded people and gain inspiration and encouragement.
