    Dear Carbon Challengers,

This is a short, sweet but sad post to let you all know that this is actually my last day at the Environment Centre.

It has been wonderful working with you on the Carbon Challenge and getting to put faces to names at Sustain ABILITY workshops… :)

I’ve found you all to be so inspiring! Your enthusiasm, ingenious ideas…[Read more]

In reply to: Anna21 posted an update Really enjoyed the wormfarm workshop! Thanks, Sonya! I will have to fix up my worm farms tomorrow and remove the coffee grounds I recently got from a coffee shop! But the compost bins will […] View

Hi @lucinda lovely to hear from you! The Tumbleweed blankets are made from natural fibres so will eventually break down and be eaten by the worms… I can’t imagine that it would be bad for your garden, but you could check with Tumbleweed to see what the contents are. I can’t think that it is harmful for the worms either to be in the blanket as…[Read more]

In reply to: Taryn posted an update @sonya, where did you get your kitchen scraps bin and degradable bags from? View

Hi @Taryn, the tidy bins and biodegradable bags I had were from Earth Basics in Fyshwick. http://www.earthbasics.com.au/.

In reply to: Tracey wrote a new post, using coffee grounds in worm farms I was surprised to see comments regarding coffee grounds being unfavourable to worms. I had always thought worms loved coffee grounds. Upon further […] View

Hi @Wombat01 & @Tracey – I did say during the workshop to direct the coffee grounds to the compost bin instead of the worm farm, however @Tracey you are right in that coffee grounds can be fed to worms too! The key is moderation really, and for beginners to worm-farming I thought it best for them to keep it simple to start with! Coffee and tea can…[Read more]

In reply to: Wombat01 posted an update Thanks Sonya for a great workshop. I shall try and look after my worms a little better. No more coffee grounds and the mouldy stuff goes in the compost. I didn’t realize they were so […] View

@Wombat01 Not a problem! Glad you enjoyed it! Let us know how you go with the worm-farm! :)

In reply to: kiplingfamily posted an update bought a string bag today for putting fruit and veg in when we do our weekly shop. Will probably need more – see how we go ! But hopefully that will cut down the number of plastic […] View

Hi @kiplingfamily I too have bought those reusable string bags for fruit and veg, but would often leave them at home… what resulted is that I now use no bags at all and simply place the fruit and veg in my trolley (piling them together) and then into my shopping bag and straight home into the fruit bowl or crisper! The string bags I use for…[Read more]

  • @Anna21 & @Wombat01 my parents have 2 chooks and 2 dogs (mini schnauzers) as well and it took a couple of months but they now get along side by side without any problems whatsoever! They just had to be slowly […]

    • @Sonya Its good to hear that it is possible for dogs to live with chickens. I guess I was thinking with two dogs they would gang up on the chickens. I will have to take it slowly and have the chicken pen inside the vegetable garden. Our vegie garden is already fenced of with dog mesh as our Italian greyhound is a keen gardener.

I’ve run a couple of worm-farming workshops in the past and these are called “White Worms”. They are composters too, and help neutralise the system, but their presence could indicate […]

  • @Ebony – look at you persevering through the freeeeezing cold mornings! Inspiration to me to do the same! Those hand warmers that @lucinda mentioned sound great – will have to get me some of those.

  • They sound great @lucinda, where can you get them from?

    • I got mine in the Kathmandu sales – they had them 3 pairs for the price of 1. I’ve seen others around too – I think most camping / outdoor stores have them. :-)

@ben – I think I’ve found the perfect solution for you and your icy cold home office… It’s called an ‘electric throw blanket’… Apparently they use like a tenth of the energy of a conventional heater and they keep you so much warmer! Google, will probably be able to direct you to local suppliers… If I wasn’t going to be away most of the…[Read more]
