Quarterly electricity bill arrived today. We’ve now had four complete quarters with solar now. Overall we are in credit about $250 for the year, so very happy from a financial perspective. Our usage for this quarter is also less than the same period for last year. The comparative usage chart that appears on the bill makes it look like our daily…[Read more]

Two 8m rolls of matching magnetic adhesive tape arrived in the mail today and I bought four 2.7m lengths of pine beading from the hardware store yesterday (decided on this instead of metal angles). Now just need to try and get to the place selling the 3mm panels of clear acrylic and have some cut to size for my first attempt at creating removable…[Read more]

Lemon drops are great – we planted them for the first time last summer and had a great crop. And they just seemed to last forever.

  • There are some very useful topics on the Alternative Technology Association (ATA) forum regarding use of a film and other window treatments.

Can’t wait to try and make my first acrylic secondary window glazing. Have found a place that sells sheets of the acrylic, now just need to buy some cut to size, order some magnets and visit the hardware store to buy metal angles for attaching the acrylic inside the frame. Hopefully do a trial window in the next couple of weeks.

Still working out a cheap way to insulate our large 1970′s aluminium sliding windows. Double glazing is way too expensive and clear comfort film apparently no good because the heat is lost through the frame. Investigating whether it would be feasible to buy something from “DIY Magnetic Double Glazing” and then attach it using metal “angles”…[Read more]

We were lucky enough to have our solar connected before the feed in tariff expired, so we have had no bills to pay – in fact we are a few hundred dollars in the positive on our bills. We have only electric heating, so this was a pleasant surprise – though our house is small, and well insulated.

Not sure why but I don’t seem to be able to respond to comments. Very frustrating.
Our floorboards are insulated with R2.0 batts, held up with a shade cloth type netting. From what I have read this seems to be the best value approach for insulating floors – and it is what was recommended by all the installers I rang.

Our 1.5kW solar installation has been up for a year. It has generated 2481 kWh and we have used 3468kW.

We got our floorboards insulated – will hopefully make the floor a bit warmer for next winter, and further reduce our power bill!

We made our own “upcycled” chook house. We used a cupboard that has been sitting unused in our shed, an old metal framed table we bought from tiny’s green shed, and a table frame that was in our shed when we bought our house several years ago. Unfortunately we couldn’t find recycled chicken wire, so had to buy that. Our kids absolutely love…[Read more]

Have started two worm farms and both are going well. One for dog poo (using the diluted castings on our native plants), and the other is taking our kitchen scraps (that don’t go to the chooks).
